Too Posh to Push! | PostDate: 5/31/2012 |
Peter spends countless hours in his shed, carving and listening to talk radio. One of his favorite guilty pleasures involves tuning in to “Woman’s Hour,” where the rise in popularity of Caesarean sections was recently discussed. While pondering the topic, Peter observed his two chickens - Scratch and Rhianna - running about the yard and wondered whether they would prefer a Caesarean to natural egg laying. Carving began immediately. The 2012 Black Box was born!

When Pigs Fly | PostDate: 5/31/2012 |
The starting point for this box figurine came from a Steve Bell cartoon that Peter saw in the Guardian newspaper. It showed two pigs flying over the British countryside. This got Peter thinking about how pigs might fly. He came up with the ingenious idea of launching a pig off the back of another while strapped to a chicken! Peter says he didn’t do the math and has no idea what payload a chicken can lift, but the idea made him smile so he went with it!

Smooch Fest | PostDate: 11/2/2011 |
Several months ago as Peter began his annual shrink-wrapped sculpture, he said to expect something amorous and lovely. The result: warthogs! When the prototype arrived, it was accompanied with a note that read, “What could be more romantic than two beautiful warthogs kissing under mistletoe.” Peter went on to explain that he hadn’t carved warthogs since 1995’s “Mud Bath” – so “Smooch Fest” is at once nostalgic and pure Calvesbertian.

Pins & Needles | PostDate: 10/11/2011 |
“Pins and Needles” depicts the weird and wonderful Echidna, an egg laying mammal that looks like a hedgehog with an extra long snout. Peter chose to carve this creature as it reminded him of a certain master carver – the one with bad hair and a big nose. He also found two other physical traits impressive. The Echidna’s back feet face the wrong way, and a certain anatomical part that will remain unmentioned is four-headed!

Something Smells Fishy | PostDate: 5/19/2011 |
Small farms in the U.K. are struggling. In an attempt to diversify, some farmers have turned their land into golf courses or tried their hand at raising ostrich and llama. Many of these ventures fail due to faddishness or lack of experience. Currently, fish farms are booming, especially in Scotland. Peter’s farmer, who looks suspiciously like a certain master carver, has replaced his sheep with fish, resulting in disaster. Featured in “Troubled Waters” are salmon, carp, tilapia, and catfish – types of fish that are being farmed. And all are dead! The farmer is confounded; his faithful sheepdog looks on in pity.

The Sphinx is a relatively new breed. Originating in Canada in 1966, a hairless kitten named “Prune” was mated with his mother, becoming the primogenitor of this “naked” cat. Despite their odd appearance, they fetch very high prices, perhaps due to their cuddliness. Because the Sphinx cat has no pelt to keep it warm, it seeks body heat and is known to sleep with its owner under the covers. Leave it to Peter to carve his model in the pose of the Egyptian Sphinx.

Sex in a Box | PostDate: 1/19/2011 |
The title of this news story is not entirely gratuitous. Peter’s giraffe box figurine, “Do the Twist”, portrays giraffes playing Twister, a game described as “sex in a box” when it launched in 1966. You may wonder how Peter made the connection between giraffes and the only game where humans serve as pieces. It was part pragmatism: long-legged, long-necked creatures don’t lend themselves well to the Harmony Kingdom box figurine format. It was also part behavioral. Giraffes are social animals and take part in neck wrestling matches to show authority. Also, they have one of the shortest sleep requirements of any animal, between 4-6 hours daily in 5-35 minute increments, so they have plenty of time to play!

A Science Lesson | PostDate: 1/22/2010 |
Do you know the meaning of the words aposematic and crypsis? Hint: they are opposites. A zoologist would know. And now Peter does too. As he was carving his tree frog box figurine, he learned that aposematic is a warning signal such as bright color to alert prey to avoid potential predators. Crypsis means to avoid detection by blending into the environment. If you’re a good student, you’ll now know that Peter’s brightly tinted frogs show aposematic adaptations.

A Reason to Smile | PostDate: 1/22/2010 |
Everyone loves dolphins! Is it their intelligence, their playful squeaks, or maybe that big toothy smile? Beloved universally, it’s hard to imagine that a fresh water dolphin is now believed extinct. In 1950, it was estimated there were 6000 Baiji dolphins in the river Yangtze. None have been seen since 2007. It seems that the Baiji has paid the price for China’s industrial success.

Wicker & Whiskers | PostDate: 9/16/2009 |
During Peter’s 2009 “Summer of Love” signing tour, he spotted a small wicker basket at host My Doll Shop’s Florida store. He knew it would look great in a carving, so proprietor Lynn McEnany kindly gave him two. Upon his return home to England, one was immediately devoured by his terrier Bart, but the other served as a model for “Wicker & Whiskers”, Peter’s most recent cats box figurine.

Peter is pleased to report that the playful otter is actually increasing in number in the U.K. Having been hunted for years, and then nearly wiped out by pollution and pesticides in the 1950’s, these semi-aquatic mammals do deserve a break! Otters have now been spotted in every county in England. However, Peter’s otter box figurine is available in very limited numbers – just 300 for worldwide distribution!

Peter Goes Carolling | PostDate: 9/16/2009 |
“First Day Fest” is based on the English Christmas carol that lists a series of increasingly grandiose gifts given from December 26th (Boxing Day) through January 6th (the Feast of Epiphany). There are many variations sung around the world, but Peter’s version features the partridge most prominently, along with five other presents: two turtle doves, three very French hens, four calling birds, five gold rings, and six geese a-laying in the interior.

Odd & Eccentric | PostDate: 6/5/2009 |
“Skip to My Lou”, Peter’s first ever amphibious fish box figurine, fits neatly into the category of odd and eccentric that he loves so much. The mudskipper can leave the water and walk across the beach if it feels like it. It actually uses its fins to move around in a series of skips. It can also catapult itself nearly two feet into the air and has the ability to breathe through its skin.

A Place of Honor for “Guest of Honor” | PostDate: 6/5/2009 |
Peter’s dragon is back, and this time he is being bothered by none other than St. George. But the knight isn’t faring so well and has just dropped his trusty sword. The inedible bits of other knights are found within the dragon’s stomach. The date of St. George’s day in the UK, April 23, is inscribed on the lid, as is the first year it was celebrated – 1222. “Bill 1564-1616” refers to that famous scribbler William Shakespeare who was born and died on St George’s day.

“Polar Melt” Bucks Fashion By Removing His Piercing | PostDate: 4/4/2008 |
Body piercing has been around since ancient times. In fact, the oldest mummified body ever found – that of Ötzi the Iceman – had a piercing! Piercing is even referenced in the Old Testament. In the West, nipple piercing dates back to the 14th century, when a queen - Isabeau of Bavaria – proudly displayed her piercings. Centuries later, in Victorian England, it became all the rage, and 100 years later, rock stars like Tommy Lee and Lenny Kravitz popularized piercing for the modern age.

Introducing the 2007/08 Royal Watch Redemption Piece | PostDate: 5/14/2007 |
Master Carver Peter Calvesbert chose the Green Sea Turtle as subject for the 2007/08 redemption for a few reasons. From a design viewpoint, the turtle is both box shaped and graceful, a rare combination in the animal world. “Seaside Rendezvous” has always been one of his favorite pieces, so he was interested in exploring the topic in larger format. Additionally, with “Wildlife Warriors” being the 07/08 club theme, Peter wanted to carve a threatened species.

The 21st Century's Rarest Small Treasure Jest | PostDate: 2/6/2007 |
Not only is it extremely rare in edition size, but it is simply extreme! Peter’s “Big Gulp” portrays a snake consuming an elephant – yow! Interestingly, snakes don’t chew their food. Instead, they have very flexible lower jaws and skull joints which allow them to open their mouths wide enough to swallow prey whole, even if it is larger in diameter than the snake itself. They have been known to swallow sheep and alligators – but an elephant?

Mrs. Barton's Bureau | PostDate: 6/30/2003 |
Harmony Kingdom carver David Lawrence is also a great story teller. "Mrs. Barton's Bureau" inspired just such a tale. Read David's story below:
"Griffin the Gardener often spends his Wednesday afternoons at the weekly auctions in the local market town. Once a week this dozy provincial backwater comes alive with stalls: selling cheese and sausages, toffee apples, knicker elastic and meat of dubious origin. It is a pleasure for him to see familiar faces, to buy a couple of treats to take back (this week a packet of humbugs and a new dibber), to return his library books and to take lunch at The Bull – but before cycling home he’ll always drop in at Chapman’s Auctions. You never know what you’ll find...

Harmony Kingdom to Present Peter Calvesbert Box Figurine at Rosemont | PostDate: 3/28/2003 |
Harmony Kingdom continues its tradition of contributing an event piece to the International Gift and Collectibles Exposition with the announcement that a special box figurine will be available to Rosemont 2003 attendees who are members of the Royal Watch for 2003.
“War and Peace” is the work of HK Master Carver Peter Calvesbert. A hawk and a dove stand back to back, in the pose adopted by duelists. Around their feet lie their accessories. For the hawk there’s a gas tank, a holster and big belt buckles of the American and British flags. The dove holds out a bouquet of flowers and carries a copy of the “Kama Sutra” under one wing, an indication of a desire to “make love, not war.”

But there’s little excitement and imagination needed to paint a wasp in photographic detail however and I soon moved on.
