For the 2008 annual in-store event, Peter has carved a trio of bats, the first time he has carved this fascinating and ecologically vital species. Of the 751 box figurines – the smallest edition size to date for an annual in-store event – 530 feature brown bats with black wings and a pink sign reading “Bat Standing Contest”. 1/5 along the base signifies that 20% of all mammals are bat species. Inscribed on the lid are “Chiroptera”, the order that bats belong to; “pups”, what baby bats are called; and “Bracken Cave”, the site near San Antonio Texas that contains the world’s largest bat population. Lift the lid to see a bat in flight. A rare 55 box figurines from the edition are painted black – the most difficult stain to apply. Few HK pieces are entirely black.165 pieces feature mold variations. Along the base are now two signs – “Dingbat Contestants” and “Giant Constant Debts”. A third anagram on the lid – “Don’t stab nesting cat” – has replaced “pups”. The interior of the mold variation portrays a witch and cat on broomstick. All of the versions contain two of Peter’s hidden signature mice. But there is only 1 piece that is a mold variation, hand-painted by Peter, and encrusted with jewels.
