Through her job as ghostwriter of a former princess’s memoirs, Colette met and made friends with the Left Bank literati. She herself has become the thinly disguised heroine of at least six novels and scores of memoirs. Colette hosts Friday evening literary salons, attended by some of the foremost writers and thinkers of the century, where she serves Formosa oolong tea, Pernod, and small crustless cucumber sandwiches. Her own memoirs were banned for obscenity in the US but sell well in France.
